Do you find time travel cool? Did you enjoy the Back to the Future movie franchise? I have an article out in science fiction magazine—publishing science fiction and non-fiction about science fiction—where I argue that Doc Brown has a moral obligation to secretly destroy the DeLorean. This is because not only does the DeLorean—in the movie universe, not in real life—allow one to change the past, but also to acquire dangerous knowledge of the future. Why secretly? Because it acts as what engineers call a proof-of-concept, demonstrating to less moral individuals that time travel is both possible and profitable, thereby incentivizing them to build their own.
